Coastal Creation:  How to design a beach inspired room

The first step to designing your interior with a coastal feel is to use the colors of the beach.  By using the calming blues, greens, tans and whites you will easily create a refreshing room that will take you away to your favorite vacation spot.

Tranquil North Carolina Coast

The crisp and calm light blue shades will transform your space into a cool and light-hearted space that is the color of the endless Carolina blue skies.  The tan, of the sand, will warm up the space and create a cozy, earthy feeling.  The green of the sea grass brings life to the room with a pop of energizing color.  The color of the worn fencing, a greyish-brown is a great neutral that will give a sense of history to the room.  The white of the clouds, breaking waves and sea shells provide a nice neutral backdrop that is crisp and clean.  An extra touch of a seashell peachy color will also add a warm accent to the room.

For the final touch you can add a few beach-inspired items or accessories to your room.  Do not go over the top or you’ll look like a souvenir store.  Just a well-placed piece of artwork or keepsake is all you need.  Maybe a seashell or two, some oars propped up in a corner or some sea glass in a vase.

With these simple steps you will have the relaxing, coastal inspired room of your dreams!

Hi!  I am Caroline Massey from Caroline C Massey Interiors in Mebane, North Carolina.  I have been married for seventeen years and have three grown step-sons, two daughters-in-law and a grandson.  I graduated in Interior Design at Randolph Community College in Asheboro, NC.  I already have a BA in Dance Education from Meredith College (Raleigh, NC).  After teaching dance in the public school system for five years I realized that was not the path for me.  I have always been interested in interior design and am overjoyed at the possibilities I have.  I have truly enjoyed everything I have learned in the interior design program at RCC.
I also work as the bookkeeper at my family's business, King Tire Service of Mebane.   I am in the process of deciding how to fit my new interior design career with my commitment to this business and family.

My style has always leaned towards a casual, comfortable and colorful design scheme.  I want to create rooms that will be livable and enjoyable at all times.  I am inspired by nature, especially the tropics and coastal environments.  I find these areas have the same vibe that I like to create and live in.  I try to use basic elements that will not go out of style quickly and enliven the room with colorful and fun accessories and art.  This way you can change the look quickly, easily and without a lot of cost.  This is the way everyone should live – with design as large as the grand Blue Sky.
