Spa Design

I have also been working on the Healing Waters Spa and residence in Lake Lure, NC.  The owners are purchasing an empty space to house both their home and spa.  I was challenged with making all their wishes fit into this empty shell.  I believe I have created a space that will be welcoming to both their patients and themselves.
As you enter the Spa you are welcomed into the lobby with a small retail space, waiting area, room for the Receptionist to work and a bookkeeper's office.  Farther on you continue on to the two massage rooms, the consultation office and the restrooms.  To the left is the open exercise area that is separated from the soothing pool by a curved glass wall.  The back left corner of the space houses the residence.  You can enter through a door on the side or through the back of the exercise area.  There is an open living/dining/kitchen area along with two bedrooms and one and a half baths.

The owners expressed an interest in using environmentally friendly products whenever possible.  This happens on the flooring throughout the interior.  The office spaces of the spa and the public area of the residence feature beautiful hand-scraped wood floors.  The exercise and pool area are covered by a resilient cork flooring.  The bathrooms feature natural slate.  The bedrooms have eco-friendly carpet made from recycled bottles.

The pool area is surrounded by a textured, tempered glass wall that looks like rain.  There are sliding glass doors on both sides to allow access.   The zero-edge pool is surrounded by a beautiful natural pebble border that can also be found on the waterfall wall that constantly recirculates water into the pool.  It can be entered through stairs on one end or the wheelchair lift on the other.

The exercise area is large enough for 20 people to do yoga at once with plenty of room for stair master machines and weights as well.  Storage for the yoga mats and other equipment is found on the back wall.  The yoga mat storage is also a colorful focal point of the wall.

The residence is a comfortable space that allows the owners to visit with family and friends.  It uses the same hardwood floors through out most of the area with carpet in the bedrooms for comfort.  The living room features a hand-braided rug made right here in North Carolina.  Much of the furniture is also made locally.

An Office for Her

I designed the office for the Collins’ home based on Mrs. Collins’ personality.  After doing a personality test I discovered that she was an ISTJ.  These initials stand for Introvert, Sensing, Thinking and Judging.  Because of this I chose four separate club chairs surrounding a coffee table that also raises to be game table height.  This way she can have her own space alone or with others without being too crowded.

There is a writing desk where she can write or use her personal computer.  Two walls of bookshelves will also hold the many books in her collection as well as small accessories.  As a Thinker & Judger she likes to know the facts and study about many things.

The colors used in the interior are warm and inviting while calling upon the beautiful scenery outside the windows.  There is also a space for her dog to rest in the corner.

I believe this will be a comfortable space for Mrs. Collins to be alone and read or host game time with her friends and family.

A Welcoming Foyer

The entry of a home is very important.  It is the first place guest see and sets the tone for the rest of the home.  For the Collins’ new home in Bermuda I have chosen a relaxed and casual look.  It will be a light-filled space with windows on two sides.

Mrs. Collins loves live plants so I have built in a custom bench with space on each side for beautiful plants.  The Kravet fabric will bring in all the colors of the surrounding environment.

There will also be a large chest right as you walk in to put down keys, mail, etc. as well as for extra storage.  It is a fun coral/red color sure to invite guests in.

The round rug brings in the colors that will be used in the living/dining/kitchen spaces that adjoin the foyer.

The wall sconces and the overhead pendant light are reminiscent of lighting found throughout Bermuda and the Caribbean.

The gorgeous handcrafted sun mirror will reflect the light and ambience of their home.

Spaces & Places Competition

As part of my Residential Design class I entered the Lazzaro Leather "Spaces & Places" Design Competition.  I was challenged with using their furniture in a home of a someone who loves to travel.  The judging was based on creativity and display of specifications.  I did not win, but enjoyed the experience.  Here is my entry:

Residence in Bermuda

In Residential Design this semester I am designing the interior of a whole home.  It is a beautiful 2 bedroom home with a wrap-around porch with French doors leading out to the beautiful veranda.  I have chosen my home to be located on a picturesque beach in Bermuda.  It will be the new home of a retired couple from Maine.  They honeymooned in Bermuda many years ago and visited several times since as well.  The couple loves to travel and hopes their friends and family will travel to visit them at their new home.

The design of the interior spaces uses colors that can be found in the surrounding environment without being too overtly “beachy”.  The muted browns, corals, golds and turquoise colors will be comfortable throughout the home.  They do plan to use some of their existing furniture and accessories in the home, but for the most part they are going to be starting from scratch to build their dream home.  I am excited to be able to help them on their newest adventure!
